PURE, NATURAL, UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER

African Shea Butter is a product extracted from the seeds of the African Shea trees which grow wild in the dry sub-Saharan Savannah belt of West Africa. They grow in about 19 countries, covering over 3000 miles across the African continent from Senegal in West Africa to Uganda, Sudan, and up into the foothills of Ethiopia. Shea butter comes from the Shea nuts and is used widely as an ingredient in food and personal care products worldwide. The top shea nut-producing countries are Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin and Togo. Shea Butter is a fatty extract from the seed of the Shea tree. The extract is known to contain a number of ingredients with biological activity. This biological activity includes moisturizing and healing skin ailments. It is the fatty acid within the Karite Shea nut that gives Shea Butter its distinctive curative properties.  Shea Butter has been used in Africa for over 1000 years for its medicinal and moisturizing properties and also used in most cosmetics today. The earliest mention of Shea Butter is from the time of Cleopatra, when there are historical references to caravans bearing clay jars of Shea Butter to be used as cosmetics. Also, Ibn Batouta, a historian and ambassador from the Sultan of Morocco to the court of Mali, in 1348 noted uses of Shea Butter he observed in West Africa. Shea Butter has an excellent ability to penetrate the skin without clogging pores, allowing the skin to breathe. Shea butter can be used alone to benefit the skin. Naturally rich in vitamins A, E, and F, it is by far one of the finest and most versatile skin care products that can be used to correct problem skin conditions. Shea Butter is now available to the rest of the world, and has been acknowledged worldwide for its remarkable skin restorative and healing ingredients. Additionally Shea Butter has already attracted the attention of several industries worldwide, including but not limited to cosmetics, food, applied science and healthcare

In general, manual, semi-mechanized and automated methods and processes are typically employed in varying degrees in processing Shea nut kernel into Shea Butter. The extraction process that produces Shea Butter is very natural, extremely tedious and meticulous, requiring the de-pulping of the fleshy Shea fruits, parboiling and drying of the shelled Shea nuts. Then the shell of the Shea nuts are cracked open and the Shea kernels are removed and dried again in the sun. This is followed carefully by hand-sorting to choose the best quality nuts.  After sorting, the Shea nuts are washed again to remove any remaining debris or poor quality nuts. The washed nuts are then laid out to dry under the strong equatorial sun. This if followed by the first round of crushing the Shea nut kernel to smaller sizes. The crushed nuts are roasted carefully and skillfully over low fire or heat.  The roasted crushed nuts are cooled and then ground or milled into a thick brown paste. The Shea nut paste is then kneaded with water.  As more water is added during the kneading process, the crude raw Shea butter foam floats and rise to the top surface above the kneading wastewater mixture. This initiates the Shea Butter extraction process.  The crude raw Shea Butter layer is then scooped off and separated from the aqueous wastewater layer. This crude raw Shea butter mass is cleansed by several additional clean water washes. The final cleansed raw Shea Butter is then heated to a hot liquid oil. Finally the resulting hot Shea oil is cooled and filtered. Filtered oil solidifies to become the unrefined Shea Butter product. This is the unrefined Shea Butter that has long been recognized for its healing properties, anti-inflammatory quality and excellence for regenerating the skin.  This traditional process of extracting Shea butter from the Shea tree nut is very natural and does not employ any chemical refining or bleaching process, and maintains all the renowned natural healing properties of Shea Butter.

Our Shea Butter is produced working directly with women using the traditional processing method to maintain all of Shea Butter’s natural active ingredients. The extraction process maintains the chemical composition that naturally comes from the shea nuts. Additionally, during our Shea Butter handling we intentionally include an additional step to naturally remove any impurities that one may find in other suppliers’ unrefined Shea butters. This additional effort aids in enhancing the texture and feel of our unrefined Shea Butter, and improves its shelf life. Unrefined Shea butter is recommended for use within skincare products. Shea Butter is slightly yellowish or ivory colored.

Ultra Refined (also known as liquid shea butter) is obtained by cold pressing of the fruit seeds of the karite tree, followed by a full refining process. At ambient temperature, shea butter presents itself in the form of a matrix mixture of a crystallized, high melting point fraction (stearine) and of a liquid low melting point fraction (olein). During the fractionation process the liquid oleins is separated from the crystalized stearines. The result is Shea Olein.
